Behind the Craft: Lil Ceramics x Boh Runga
When we launched our delicate ceramic jewellery dishes, we were lucky enough to collaborate with the talented Lily Weeds of Lil Ceramics — a true gem in the local ceramics world.
Lily’s journey into clay began at her community art centre, juggling pottery classes with a baby in tow. What started as a creative escape quickly became a passion. Over time, she invested in her own tools and set up a home studio before eventually moving into shared creative spaces and now, a dream studio in a converted apple shed near Muriwai Beach.
Her work is all about beauty and function, with a love for experimentation at the core of her process. While she’s not big on sketching, Lily brings her ideas to life directly through clay, often making several versions before landing on the right form. Glazing, she admits, is the trickiest part — it’s the final, high-stakes step after so much careful work.
Like many creatives, Lily has been impacted by global supply disruptions, especially with clay and glaze materials. But there’s a silver lining: more Kiwi businesses are turning to local makers, from restaurants to cafes, embracing the unique charm of handcrafted wares.
Lately, Lily’s been experimenting with wild clay sourced from places close to her heart — including a batch she collected from Whananaki beach. Transforming that natural clay into tumblers has been an exciting (and sometimes unpredictable) adventure, but it’s deeply meaningful: a tangible, everyday connection to the land. She’s even working with clay dug from a friend’s Muriwai driveway, tweaking it to make it usable — and dreaming of sipping coffee from a cup made of her own backyard.
We love that every piece Lily creates is infused with care, curiosity, and a deep sense of home. Just like our jewellery, they’re treasures designed to be used and loved every day.
