Since the first collection Birdland was released in 2007, Boh Runga has become synonymous with jewellery that embodies sentiment and a sense of belonging for those of us from Aotearoa, New Zealand.
Taking inspiration from the natural world and in particular from the flora and fauna that makes our home special, Boh Runga jewellery is loved by women as a treat for themselves, for their mothers or daughters, friends and partners; and is favoured by men as something beautiful for their loved ones.
When Lisa Carrington won gold at the 2021 Olympics she was wearing Boh Runga earrings, a departing gift from her fiancé in the build-up to Tokyo.
During her first Royal Tour of New Zealand, Meghan Markle was gifted a pair of studs by then Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern featuring our iconic Feather Kiss.
From birthdays to anniversaries, graduations to leaving gifts and everything in between, Boh Runga is made to be gifted, to honour life's milestones and achievements and to celebrate those you love.
Boh started her career in creativity in a different form. A musician and front person for New Zealand multi-platinum selling band stellar*, her song-writing experience enabled her to take her love of telling stories and apply it in a new, tangible way. Always interested in accessories and an avid collector of jewellery and mementoes from traveling throughout New Zealand and overseas, Boh finds joy in the way jewellery can be a reminder of a particular time in your life, of a faraway place or especially of a person. Fashioned in sterling silver and gold, each of her designs spark from ideas that catch her eye. A turn of phrase, a favourite melody, Māori myths and the feathers of her much loved native birds have all been the catalysts for some of the most recognisable and treasured pieces worn by New Zealanders today.
Boh Runga was born out of a chance opportunity for Boh to design a jewellery collection for bullion business The New Zealand Mint. Boh bravely jumped in head first and set about creating something a little different. She visited every jewellery store she could find, and found her niche in meaningful designs based on New Zealand native birds, with each piece originating from her hand drawn concepts and telling of each story in what would become her signature story cards. As a self-confessed ‘disorganised creative’, Boh partnered with friend Toyah Attwell. While Boh was sketching initial design concepts, Toyah was working with local suppliers on samples and setting up the brand’s first website. Their complementary skill sets have kept the business both grounded and dynamic. The ‘Birdland’ collection was adored and continues to set the tone for Boh Runga’s trademark meaningful jewellery for gifting.
Before I started designing jewellery I thought about what kind of jewellery I would like to create. I wanted longevity. I wanted something for everyone; inclusivity and a sense of belonging. I didn’t want to follow trends or be beholden to the tides of fashion. I wanted jewellery that people felt held meaning for them and that would be gifted with that in mind. A reminder of home, of loved ones and of how unique New Zealand is. That was my approach. New Zealand's birdlife was my first foray into design and came about from wanting a little bit of home for people to take with them everywhere. The final piece was the packaging. A pretty, round box in a pale blue that evoked a clear summer sky was dressed in a ribbon tied in a bow. It was your gift already wrapped up and ready to give. I love designing and I am so grateful that the jewellery is still going strong after all these years.
Your Boh Runga jewellery will come in our signature round blue box, reminiscent of a clear blue summer sky, and accompanied with a beautiful story card, communicating the inspiration behind your chosen design.
